“Oh my goodness! I can’t believe it!” Bridget squealed and clapped her hands. She giggled with merriment.

“What’s wrong? Are you in pain? Do I need to send for Carson?” Gus asked, worry filling his voice.

“I feel fine, I promise. I’m sorry I woke you.”

“What are you doing over there?” his voice was heavy with sleep.

“Too much rest, I suppose. Listen, Gus, you’ll never believe it. Sophia—”

“Is something wrong? Do I need to go over and check on her?”

He was already out of bed, and Bridget immediately felt guilty for waking him. Along with having lost sleep over the last few days, he had spent much of his time worrying over her when he was awake. A wave of sadness washed over her. “Everything is fine. Go back to bed, you need your rest.”

“I’m awake now.”

He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her, resting his hands where their child had been. She rested her head back against his shoulder and covered his hands with hers.

“How are you, really?”

“Sad, but thankful it happened early on. Does that make me a horrible person?” she asked.

“If it does then I am one as well. I’m just thankful I didn’t lose you, too.” Gus dropped a kiss on her neck and murmured, “Now, tell me what is going on with Sophia.”

“Carson kissed her.”

“Again? So, he wasn’t just comforting her last night.”

“I suppose not. I watched them get out of a hack. Carson escorted her to the door and then they kissed. At first I thought Sophia was angry at him.”

“Why?”

“She threw a coat at him, but then he threw a snowball at her. They were both laughing.”

“I’m guessing this is a good development.”

“Excellent. They still feel comfortable with one another. That is a good sign.”

“It is rather late. Where do you think they’ve been?” Gus asked, sounding like a concerned older brother.

“Sophia was carrying her skates.”

“Hmm… Well, if you’re finished spying on your best friend, why don’t you come back to bed? I’m lonely without you beside me.”

“I love you so much, Gus.”

“I love you, too, beautiful,” he said. He took her hand and led her to the bed.

As she followed her husband and went eagerly into his arms, she enjoyed being comforted and held by him. She lay with her ear on his chest and listened as he slipped into a restful sleep. She sent up a silent prayer that Sophia and Carson could find a happiness and love that rivaled theirs.
