âOh my goodness! I canât believe it!â Bridget squealed and clapped her hands. She giggled with merriment.
âWhatâs wrong? Are you in pain? Do I need to send for Carson?â Gus asked, worry filling his voice.
âI feel fine, I promise. Iâm sorry I woke you.â
âWhat are you doing over there?â his voice was heavy with sleep.
âToo much rest, I suppose. Listen, Gus, youâll never believe it. Sophiaââ
âIs something wrong? Do I need to go over and check on her?â
He was already out of bed, and Bridget immediately felt guilty for waking him. Along with having lost sleep over the last few days, he had spent much of his time worrying over her when he was awake. A wave of sadness washed over her. âEverything is fine. Go back to bed, you need your rest.â
âIâm awake now.â
He walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her, resting his hands where their child had been. She rested her head back against his shoulder and covered his hands with hers.
âHow are you, really?â
âSad, but thankful it happened early on. Does that make me a horrible person?â she asked.
âIf it does then I am one as well. Iâm just thankful I didnât lose you, too.â Gus dropped a kiss on her neck and murmured, âNow, tell me what is going on with Sophia.â
âCarson kissed her.â
âAgain? So, he wasnât just comforting her last night.â
âI suppose not. I watched them get out of a hack. Carson escorted her to the door and then they kissed. At first I thought Sophia was angry at him.â
âWhy?â
âShe threw a coat at him, but then he threw a snowball at her. They were both laughing.â
âIâm guessing this is a good development.â
âExcellent. They still feel comfortable with one another. That is a good sign.â
âIt is rather late. Where do you think theyâve been?â Gus asked, sounding like a concerned older brother.
âSophia was carrying her skates.â
âHmm⦠Well, if youâre finished spying on your best friend, why donât you come back to bed? Iâm lonely without you beside me.â
âI love you so much, Gus.â
âI love you, too, beautiful,â he said. He took her hand and led her to the bed.
As she followed her husband and went eagerly into his arms, she enjoyed being comforted and held by him. She lay with her ear on his chest and listened as he slipped into a restful sleep. She sent up a silent prayer that Sophia and Carson could find a happiness and love that rivaled theirs.
